UPNM Ceremonial Mace – Zulfaqar Sword

The UPNM Mace is inspired by the Zulfaqar Sword, which was once wielded by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his son-in-law, Sayyidina Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah honour his countenance). The sword measures five feet in length and is crafted from silver alloyed with iron, with gold plating. A verse from the Holy Qur’an, Surah Al-Anfal (verse 60), is intricately inlaid on the blade.

The tip of the scabbard is adorned with a yellow Royal Topaz gemstone, symbolising the sovereignty of the Malay Rulers. This is followed by a ruby gemstone emitting a chilli-red hue, representing the Malaysian Army. The Royal Malaysian Air Force is symbolised by a deep blue sapphire, while a sea-blue sapphire mounted near the uppermost section of the sword represents the Royal Malaysian Navy.

A Symbol of Refined Character
and Intellectual Fortitude

The university logo, crafted from pure gold, is affixed to the central part of the sword hilt.

Flowing motifs of betel leaves and hibiscus flowers adorn a large portion of the scabbard, reflecting the refinement of Malay values and noble character that continue to be upheld by the university.

Indeed, the harmonious combination of the sword blade, verses from the Holy Qur’an, and the radiance of precious gemstones stands as a manifestation of a profound philosophy of knowledge, as well as the enduring spirit of perseverance and courage that will never fade among members of the university community.
